Babies & Beauty Routines

How does a woman’s beauty routine change after her first child is born?

The early morning is a curious time of day — a heavy sense of tired greats you as you wake, but slowly throughout the morning things become lighter, clearer, louder, busier, rushed. There are the usual things on the agenda: coffee, shower, breakfast, beauty routine, and be sure not to forget your keys as you run out the door.

Now, let’s add the needs of a newborn baby. What part of your routine stays, and what goes? If there’s ever a time a woman faces a complete overhaul of her beauty routine, it’s when her first baby is born.

Alison Egan, a local Chicago Montessori teacher and mother of a six-month-old baby boy, thought that all her experience with children would prepare her for her own child, but it didn’t: “I thought it would be easy since I would have one child compared to 20, but it wasn’t. I can’t hand Harry back. He’s all mine.”

We asked Alison to share with us what her beauty routine was before she had her son, Harry, and what her beauty routine was after he was born.

Alison explained: “My routine is a lot different now that it was before I had Harry. Before I was much more focused on my skin rather than make up — I spent a lot of time on cleansing and moisturizing, with minimal time spent on makeup. The makeup I wore was tinted moisturizer, some bronzer, and mascara. As for my hair, I spent much more time on it pre-Harry. I’d straighten it and style it frequently.”

It’s clear to see that Alison had much more time to primp and prep when the morning could be all about her, but after she became a mom, the mornings turned into messy buns and a bit of lipstick.

“After I had my son, concealer became my new best friend. And coffee. And usually sunglasses. I began to forget all the regular aspects of my beauty routine, especially the basics. I’d forget to put earrings in. Or mascara. Or my lipstick. Then of course, just as you put on a beautiful top, baby spits up.”

We were curious: Why did it change so much?

Alison explained, “getting ready is all about getting Harry ready. If I have an hour, I usually have to get him ready. 50 of those minutes are for him, and that’s it.”

With kids it’s always 80/20, but it’s okay because they need you and you need them. Having a child makes you a better person because it is no longer about you, it’s about caring and nurturing for another person. You become selfless. What once seemed routine or mundane becomes a special event. However, as GIT Mom would say, it’s just as important to take time out of your busy schedule to pamper yourself.

If you’re in need of a pampering session, Blowtique is available for all your needs.

5 Technologies to Change Fashion

IMG_7122-1

My cell phone wakes me up in the morning, Google provides geographical directions to an otherwise unknown location demanding my presence, and I purchase basic, household goods (like paper towels, tape, shampoo, etc.) without leaving my home– thank you, technology! Technology’s reach is never ending and in the next few years, adaptations to the fashion world will be moving from the science fiction realm into our realities.

A fashion brand in Scotland called Pringle incorporated laser-sintered nylon fabric into it’s garments for Winter 2014 by using 3D printing techniques. Bands of the printed material were used to decorate garments in the form of cuffs for jackets, while larger bits were dedicated to creating diamond-shaped Argyle patterns on pullover and sleeveless tops.

Could the days of the human model be numbered? Scientists at the UK’s Manchester Metropolitan University have been experimenting with 3D body scanners and Hollywood-style motion-capture equipment to ultimately create chillingly realistic, flawless, digital renditions of he human body. These digitally created avatars can then be “dressed” in whatever clothing the programmer desires and then topped with all the movement and appearances of an actual model.

Color changing fabrics are on the rise, and I’m not talking the shiny embellishments we found frequenting clothing throughout the 80s or 90s. Color changing fabric technology is stemming from very scientific principles and is being tested at various universities throughout the United States. The US Military has already expressed interest in the technology in hopes to improve camouflage patterns. Though this technology does not currently frequent the marketplace, it is of no doubt that it will one day be available for the average consumer. After all, the Internet as a whole was originally created for military access only and look where we are now!

The concept of self-healing fabrics may seem something out of this world– its actually a lot more simple and realistic than that. Scientists around the world are working on fabrics that heal themselves under specific atmospheric characteristics. For example, fabrics that mend themselves under a certain temperature are being tested and improved.
You might be thinking, “how on earth could I fix my raincoat with heat? By placing it in the oven?” No! Do not place your raincoat in the oven! This kind of material is fixed by an act as simple as placing your clothes in the wash and then drier.

NFC (or Near Field Communication) is already changing the world of retail. This kind of technology allows retailers to offer wireless forms of payments, furthering their abilities to target marketing. Besides wireless payment capabilities, the NFC chip, if placed onto a clothing garment, could be scanned by the consumer (using their smartphone) thus leading the shopper to a look-book of possible outfit combos featuring the scanned article of clothing. Amazing!

We are beyond thrilled to announce that there is now a Blowtique baby! As some of you know, our founder and owner Fiona McEntee has been expecting, and baby Rose Allanah McEntee-Sajdak arrived on October 15, 2013 at 10:34am to Fiona and her husband Brian.

Named after two of her great grandmothers, Rose is eight pounds, 20.5 inches of pure perfection! Her middle name, Allanah, is an ode to her mother’s homeland of Ireland – it is a Gaelic name from the Irish word ‘a leanabh,’ meaning dear child.

Weekend Update

It’s an exciting time here at Blowtique! Not only is founder/owner Fiona McEntee’s due date almost here (Blowtique baby!), but we’ve also launched our new ponytail/bun bar and had professional photographs taken of our salon. It wouldn’t be nearly as exciting unless we were able to share it all with you so thank you to our friends and clients for being the best in the business!

As you might remember, we launched a summer braid bar in July, based on the braid’s extended popularity and the season’s music festivals, and we’ve now updated the bar for fall/winter into a ponytail & bun bar! You can choose from a variety of different ponytail and bun styles including, but not limited to, messy buns, topknots, twisted ponys and more. No appointments are necessary for the service, but there is a possible wait time!ImageImage

We also recently had photographer Tim Toomey of Covert Nine to the salon to shoot some photos, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the result!

HAIR ENVY: Molly Hillenbrand Vernon

Chicago has welcomed many new and fabulous brands to our city recently, but none are more exciting than Luxaby Child & Baby boutique on Oak Street. We spoke with owner Molly Hillenbrand Vernon for our latest hair envy feature and are thrilled to share more about the store, her product must-haves and her style secrets!

Image

Congratulations on the Chicago store! Can you describe the Luxaby concept?: Luxaby Child & Baby is a boutique featuring a stylish selection of maternity and children’s clothing from some of the top designers from around the world. We’ve curated a cohesive collection with an emphasis on classic and timeless style. We offer an array of clothing and gift options from $20-$600. We truly have something for everyone!

Why’d you choose Chicago as your second U.S. location?: Chicago is an amazing destination for people from all around the world. Oak Street in particular is one of the best luxury shopping locations in the United States and is on a current rebirth with the new stores opening this fall. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect place for Luxaby to be; a beautiful luxury shopping destination that caters to discerning and knowledgeable men and woman who appreciate quality and hard to find items. Oak Street tends to have a more intimate feel than some of the surrounding shopping areas and that works perfectly for the Luxaby store.

How would you describe the Chicago woman?: Chicago women are stylish, authentic and active.

Which Chicago hot-spots are you most looking forward to trying?: I can’t wait to eat at Girl & the Goat and to bring my two little girls to the Chicago Children’s Museum!

Take us through your daily beauty routine: I keep my routine pretty simple. I always start the day with a tinted moisturizer. I usually just put on mascara and a lip gloss and am out the door. In the evenings I add a bronzer and blush and pair it with a darker lipstick to go into evening.

Do you have a go-to hairstyle? If so, what is it?: I love long blown out hair – however, when in a rush, I put it back in a messy bun.

Do you vary your look season to season? How does your routine change in the summer vs. winter?: I have had the same look for a while – the only additional thing I add in the summer is the bronzer. It might be time to change it up a bit – I keep my look pretty neutral and if I play up the eyes, then I keep my lips neutral or if I do a bright lip color, then I will keep the eyes minimal.

What are a few of the season’s best hair trends?: I am loving the top bun (i.e. classic beauty Audrey Hepburn!) and I love the braid trend that is in now, too – great for days where your hair isn’t looking its best but still looks summer fabulous!

Biggest beauty splurges?: Chanel eyeshadow in Raffinement and Koh Gen Do Emollient Cream

What does a bad hair day look like for you?: When I don’t have time to dry my hair completely, it lays flat and has no bounce. It curls underneath and is straight on top which makes it look messy.

Would you rather – hair down or hair up?: If I am going out I prefer to wear my hair down but when I am relaxing with my kids, I prefer it back and out of my face in a messy bun.

Whose hair do you envy?: I am obsessed with anyone who can carry thick long hair and have it look shiny and fabulous. Brooke Burke, Carrie Underwood and Blake Lively always have beautiful hair.

What’s a style you’d love to try at Blowtique that would be too hard to try at home?: Some of the fancy braid styles I absolutely love but am unable to braid my own hair for some reason. I just love the look, especially in the summer!

Luxaby Baby & Child will be located at 59 East Oak Street. Visit www.luxabybaby.com for more information and to shop their e-commerce selection and be sure to follow them on Twitter!

Royal Hair

In honor of the royal birth in-progress, we’d like to bring your attention to a few of Kate Middleton’s best hairstyles, of which there are many. While she’s known for her voluminous waves, Kate has mixed it up recently, and we can only hope that the royal baby has her hair (sorry, Will!).
