HAIR ENVY: Laurie Leopold

Happy New Year! We have so many exciting projects in 2014 that we cannot wait to share with all of you. From seasonal beauty bars to styling classes to TV segments, we’d like to think that 2014 will be the year of Blowtique, and we hope you’ll help us make that happen!

On that note, we’re beyond excited to start the New Year with a Hair Envy profile, featuring the fabulous Laurie Leopold, founder of 312 Beauty and account supervisor at Olson Engage. Not only does Laurie specialize in ‘living pretty in the second city,’ she also has incredible taste, which is why we were thrilled to learn her beauty secrets, style must-haves and Chicago hot spots! Don’t worry – we’re sharing!

What’s your current occupation?: I’m an account supervisor at Olson Engage, doing public relations and social media. I also run, a blog all about beauty and Chicago.

How’d you get into the field, and why?: I began my professional career in Washington, DC, thinking I would go down the lobbyist route. I started in public affairs, working for a trade association in-house and then for a boutique agency that specialized in strategic communication. When I moved to Chicago in 2009, I found a great home at Olson (then Dig Communications) working on incredible brands with some of the most creative minds in the business. I’m challenged every single day to deliver for my clients and have a ton of fun along the way.

What are a few of your favorite Chicago hot spots?: I love shopping at Arch Apothecary and Space519 – they carry so many niche eco beauty brands that you don’t see often. I’m still obsessed with Au Cheval – burger cravings hit me hard! I’ve been there so many times and have yet to order anything else from the menu.

Take us through your daily beauty routine: I’m always testing different products, so what I use varies.  In the a.m., I rinse with warm water and follow-up with serum, moisturizer, eye cream and SPF. At night, I follow a similar routine after removing makeup and cleansing. I’m thorough with skincare! For complexion, I use Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation (it doubles as a concealer!), RMS Buriti Bronzer and Butter London Crème Blush in ‘Pistol Pink.’ I love the texture of cream products in the winter! I use the Urban Decay Naked3 palette on my eyes and finish with liquid liner and a swipe of mascara. Lips vary, but I love everything that ILIA makes!

Do you have a go-to hairstyle? If so, what is it?: My hair is naturally stick straight and I’m lucky enough that I can air dry it and let it be! I do that most days and then usually throw it up in a messy bun.Image

How do you take care of yourself with such a busy schedule? What’s most important to you – skin, hair, body, etc?: Dehydration is the enemy. I try to drink a lot of water and I use facial oils on my face and body to make sure I don’t dry out. I don’t get as much sleep as I should, but I always cleanse my face and never go to bed with makeup on.

Do you vary your look season to season? How does your routine change in the summer vs. winter?: Absolutely! I always love a bright lip, but tend to wear more pinks in the winter. It goes well with freezing cold, ya know? I also wear more bronzer in the winter than summer because I feel like I need it more. I’m more minimalist with everything in the summer because too much hair or makeup feels heavy.

What are a few of the season’s best hair trends?: I love a messy chignon, though I’ve yet to master the perfectly undone look! I’m also ready for the ponytail to come back with a vengeance. I love this one from the spring Creatures of the Wind show.

Biggest beauty splurges?: I’ll always splurge on skincare. I love Lina Hanson’s Global Face Serum! Also, Kjaer Weis makeup is worth the investment. You can refill her weighty monogrammed compacts so you don’t spend as much the second time around.

What does a bad hair day look like for you?: There’s nothing a top knot can solve.

Would you rather – hair down or hair up?: Up – I can’t stand tangles!

Whose hair do you envy?: Penelope Cruz is my hair idol. Bangs, curly, straight, light, dark — it’s always perfect.

What’s a style you’d love to try at Blowtique that would be too hard to try at home?: A braided updo. Anytime I try to braid, I fail miserably!
